To celebrate International Pathology Day on Wednesday 11th November 2020, Pathology Awareness Australia will hold a Q&A session on Facebook Live at 12.30pm AEDT all about cervical cancer. Taking questions will be Adjunct Professor Annabelle Farnsworth, an expert in cervical screening, and Professor Ian Frazer whose work on the Human Papillomavirus vaccine won him Australian of the Year in 2006.

Australia is a world leader in cervical cancer prevention and is on track to eliminate cervical cancer by 2035.  Although the pandemic has disrupted healthcare for many people, this goal is still achievable with participation in screening and immunisation programs.

The high quality and innovation in Australia’s pathology laboratories has been key to reaching this enviable point.

As director of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Associate Professor Nerina Harley manages the care of over 2,000 critically ill patients each year.

These patients are admitted for many reasons including trauma, post-surgical care, complications from cancer and other medical conditions. Critically ill patients require around the clock monitoring and top level care from Nerina’s team. Some are so ill they are kept sedated to avoid pain and so cannot communicate with the doctors.

“Accurate and rapid pathology results are incredibly important to the diagnosis and treatment of our patients. We are absolutely dependent on pathology for precise and dependable results.”

Pathology plays a role in the successful management of a huge number of conditions in an ICU setting.

“We could not do what we do without pathology’s assistance in the rapid diagnosis of conditions including heart attacks, haemorrhages, cancer and many other conditions.”

“Working in intensive care is extremely rewarding as we see patients at their most critically unwell. We can make a real difference and save lives. Even though it’s not seen by our patients, pathology plays a hugely important role in their care.”

Professor Peter Colman heads up the Diabetes & Endocrinology Unit at a major metropolitan hospital. This medical specialty examines imbalances of the body’s hormones, and is heavily reliant on pathology tests for diagnosis and management.

“Pathology is absolutely key, we just could not look after people properly without pathology.”

“For diabetes, pathology can identify kidney complications before symptoms begin. By the time people are symptomatic, it can be too late. Early detection avoids amputations or kidney transplants, which not only helps the patient, it saves healthcare dollars.”

Professor Colman also performs research into diabetes, and pathology has an important role there, in assessing the safety and efficacy of new treatments for diabetes.

“Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that is set to strangle the health system financially. Pathology can help prevent or delay onset, and improve management, which reduces healthcare spending.”

“Fortunately, the quality of pathology services in Australia is very high. In my experience, the level of quality control is incredibly strong.”

A mere few minutes can spell the difference between life and death for the patients of Dr Helen Opdam.

As a Senior Intensive Care Specialist at the Austin Hospital, she and her team of experts rely on fast and accurate pathology tests to give their critically ill patients the best chance of survival.

“We are constantly adjusting the therapies and treatments we give our patients to improve their condition. Frequent pathology testing is crucial to this as it helps us know if these new treatments are working. Pathology results tell us if a patient’s condition has deteriorated, improved or remained the same, and allows us to direct treatment accordingly.”

From a daily blood test to the minute-by-minute monitoring of gases such as carbon dioxide in the blood, the amazing work of Dr Opdam and her team would not be possible without pathology.
