A mere few minutes can spell the difference between life and death for the patients of Dr Helen Opdam.
As a Senior Intensive Care Specialist at the Austin Hospital, she and her team of experts rely on fast and accurate pathology tests to give their critically ill patients the best chance of survival.
“We are constantly adjusting the therapies and treatments we give our patients to improve their condition. Frequent pathology testing is crucial to this as it helps us know if these new treatments are working. Pathology results tell us if a patient’s condition has deteriorated, improved or remained the same, and allows us to direct treatment accordingly.”
From a daily blood test to the minute-by-minute monitoring of gases such as carbon dioxide in the blood, the amazing work of Dr Opdam and her team would not be possible without pathology.
